These snakes are basically timid by nature and are mostly harmless, if not attacked or threatened. Black racers are very common in Southern part of the United States. They will also slither into the water to escape a predator on land. Hawks, crows, raccoons, crayfish, and other snake species (such as the coral snake and king snake ) will eat garter snakes, with even shrews and frogs eating the juveniles. The juvenile black racer is usually grey in color, with clear reddish brown blotches, that fade into a solid-colored tail. Predators, such as hawks and other birds prey upon Black Racer snakes. With no real consensus on the classification of species of Thamnophis, disagreement between taxonomists and sources, such as field guides, over whether two types of snakes are separate species or subspecies of the same species is common. Garter snake is the common name given to the nearly harmless, small to medium-sized snakes belonging to the genus Thamnophis. During the mating season, this ability fools other males into attempting to mate with them. Humans are the biggest threat to these snakes. Ecologically, their dietary habits are garden-friendly since they prey upon many such animals, which actually stand as enemy to the garden plants and crops. They often use these techniques to escape when ensnared by a predator. However, male garter snakes sometimes produce both male and female pheromones. The Black Racers usually prey upon rodents, like rats, insects, other smaller snakes, moles, lizards, frogs and toads, and even birds and bird eggs. They can glide, swim and climb at unbelievably quick speed. Size: The average size of black racer snakes is 20-56 inches. Garter snakes are closely related to the genus Nerodia (water snakes), with some species having been moved back and forth between genera. This reflects the fact that amphibians are a large part of their diet. They almost exclusively inhabit areas with some form of water, often an adjacent wetland, stream, or pond. Endemic to North America, they can be found from the Subarctic plains of Canada to Central America.
Garter snakes have complex systems of pheromonal communication. Color: The black racer is marked with dull colors all over its body. Outside Florida, it is also found throughout the Eastern regions of the US, from NE Texas. Garter snakes populate a variety of habitats, including forests, woodlands, fields, grasslands, and lawns. The maximum length of an adult black racer can go up to 70 inches approximately. They are very skilled swimmers and opportunistic predators. The locomotion of these creatures is extremely quick. These snakes will also discharge a malodorous, musky-scented secretion from a gland near the cloaca. Their dorsal side is black, contrasted with a grey belly and a white jaw-line and throat. Vision: These snakes are considered to be color blind. Body: They have a slim body, covered with smooth scales, with 17 rows of dorsal scales in the middle of their body. Garter snakes are present throughout most of North America. They can find other snakes by following their pheromone -scented trails. Male and female skin pheromones are so different as to be immediately distinguishable. These non-poisonous snakes are mainly found in grasslands, bushy areas, prairies, scrub, sand hills and those areas that are much wooded. Even domestic dogs and domestic cats are their predators. They have a huge appetite, as compared to other snakes in the area. It is widely spread throughout the mainland of Florida, as also the Florida keys. Black Racer snake, also known as the Southern black racer, or the Black Runner, is a common species of serpents mostly found in and around the southern regions of the United States. If disturbed, a garter snake may coil and strike, but typically it will hide its head and flail its tail.
